    Key Stage 1

Key Stage 1 is made up of Years 1 and 2:

    • Year 1 – for children aged 5-6 years, and we have three classes of 30 children in each.
    • Year 2 – for children aged 6-7 years, and we have three classes of 30 children in each.

In Key Stage One, children follow The National Curriculum.

In school, our curriculum is enhanced by educational visits out of school and visitors into school. The extended curriculum also features termly parent workshops, our Wellbeing Wednesday co-curricular clubs and whole school activity weeks.

Relationships Education and Heath Education is included in the curriculum for PSHE, Science and RE.  In Key Stage 1, children do not receive formal sex education. Our teaching focusses on age-appropriate relationships, health, growing up and keeping safe.

    Children learn about:

    • Families, friendships, kindness and respectful relationships.
    • How families can be different and the importance of feeling loved and cared for.
    • Their bodies, including appropriate scientific names for body parts.
    • Privacy, personal boundaries and understanding that their body belongs to them.
    • How to recognise when something makes them feel uncomfortable and how to seek help from a trusted adult.
    • How humans grow and change from babies into adults.
    • Healthy lifestyles, hygiene, emotions and wellbeing.
    • Staying safe, including when using the internet.

These areas are taught sensitively and in an age-appropriate way. We aim to give children the vocabulary, confidence and understanding they need to develop healthy relationships, care for themselves and others, and keep themselves safe. Parents cannot withdraw children from statutory Relationships Education, Health Education or National Curriculum Science. Any additional sex education beyond these statutory areas is not taught at our school. For more information, please see the guidance from DfE.
