St Laurence Church Infant School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.

We have a number of policies and procedures in place that contribute to our safeguarding commitment, including our Safeguarding Policy which can be viewed in the Policies section of this website. You can also read our child-friendly version of our Safeguarding Policy at the bottom of this page.

We aim to work in close partnership with parents to support the children in every way possible. However, there is a clear responsibility on all schools to ensure they work together with other agencies to safeguard and promote the welfare of all children.

Sometimes we may need to share information and work in partnership with other agencies when there are concerns about a child’s welfare. We will ensure that our concerns about our pupils are discussed with the child's parents or carers first, unless we have reason to believe that such a move would be contrary to the child’s welfare.

It may be helpful for parents/carers to know that the Local Authority requires the school’s Designated Safeguarding Lead to report any obvious or suspected indicators that a child is at risk of harm.  This includes non-accidental injuries, domestic abuse in the home and signs of neglect. The school's duty is simply to report and it is the decision of the Local Authority on whether any further steps should be taken.

This procedure is intended to protect children at risk and schools are encouraged to take the attitude that where there are grounds for suspicion it is better to be safe than sorry. This does mean that there is a risk of upsetting some parents by reporting a case, which on investigation proves unfounded. In such circumstances, it is hoped that parents would accept that the school was acting in what were believed to be the child’s best interests.

We actively support the Government’s Prevent Agenda to counter radicalism and extremism.
