    Sports Premium

    Why is Physical Activity Important?

All children and young people should live healthy active lives. In primary school, the foundations of positive and enjoyable participation in regular physical activity are embedded. The Department for Education (DfE) wants all children to have equal access to high-quality PE provision and opportunities to experience and participate in a wide range of sports and physical activities. Schools should aim to provide high-quality PE and sport for at least 2 hours a week, complemented by a wide range of extracurricular sport and competitive opportunities. By providing this it can help improve children’s health and wellbeing, personal development as well as academic attainment.

What is the PE and Sports Premium?

To help schools to achieve this aim, the Government provides funding of £150 million per annum for primary school sport funding.  The funding is targeted towards improving the quality of sport and PE for all their children.

    Allocation

Funding for schools is calculated by the number of primary aged pupils (between the ages of 5 and 11) as at the annual census in January.

For the year 2025-26 St Laurence Church Infant School received £17,770

    Accountability

Schools are held to account for how they spend the sport funding. Please read the report below which gives details of our PE and Sport Premium Grant, how we have allocated the funding and the impact this has had.

    Sustainability

The improvements made through the Sports Premium will be sustained by embedding high-quality PE and physical activity within the curriculum and wider provision. Investment in staff CPD and modelling has increased teachers’ confidence, knowledge and skills, enabling staff to continue delivering high-quality PE without reliance on external support.

PE and playground equipment purchased through the grant will continue to support active lessons and play, while successful approaches such as active playtimes, sports clubs, Well-being Wednesday and Forest School are now established within school practice.

Curriculum progression maps, ongoing monitoring and staff expertise will ensure that PE remains a high priority and that future pupils continue to benefit from the improvements made through Sports Premium funding.

A wide range of physical activities, including competitive sports helps all children to enjoy being active and keeping healthy
